Water damage is the most commonly reported issue by homeowners today. Some people keep ignoring this problem in their house until it serves as an impediment to routine activities. But, merely pretending that no problem exists does not solve it on its own. Water damage can quickly become a grave issue for your entire house. Therefore, the longer you delay solving it, the more serious it will become. Moreover, it will also cost you more money to resolve an aggravated water damage issue than one at its nascent stage.

Various issues can lead to significant water damage in the house, including burst or leaking pipes, floods, heavy rains, blocked gutters, and whatnot. Taking quick actions can save your home from mold problems and severe damage to the foundations. Mold starts growing within 24 hours of water damage, even if it is not that serious. Other water damage issues include water penetrating the walls, impacting the structure, peeling paints, and stains on the walls.

If you face water damage, there are certain steps that you can immediately take to contain the problem.

1. Call a water damage advisor

At any given moment, there are around three types of water flowing inside your house. One is clean water coming from the main supply and the rainwater. The second type of water is the grey water coming from the washing machines, toilets, and dishwashers. The third and the most worrying kind is black water which contains bacteria and microorganisms.

If water damage occurs due to black water, it’s always recommended to call a Water Damage Advisor to implement mitigation strategies. There are often health issues involved in fixing this kind of water damage. Therefore, it needs professional devices, chemicals, and cleaning agents to clean the area affected by such water damage.

On the contrary, if minimal damage occurs due to clean water, most homeowners can fix it by themselves.

2. Locate the source of water damage

In the house, water damage is caused due to many issues. If it is due to natural disasters or extreme weather, the source is easy to locate. However, water damage due to faulty plumbing, burst pipes, and other issues is difficult to identify because it’s often inside the walls in modern houses. Nonetheless, if it’s not due to natural disasters, you can contain it by shutting off the water main supply valve.

This way, you can stop the water flow to the point where the fault occurs. Some people are well-versed in plumbing systems; they can easily fix broken pipes and other minor issues. But calling a plumber is a much viable option for others.

3. Remove the excess water

The longer water stays clogged at one place, the more severe water damage problems can occur. Suppose water damage occurs due to leaking pipes behind the vanity in the bathroom or under the sink. In that case, it can lead to the accumulation of water under and around the affected area. What’s more, this water can easily travel to other rooms through the floorboards. Therefore, it’s better to remove the puddles of water as soon as possible.

You can use mops and buckets to remove the water from the floor. You can also use wet-dry shop vacuums to remove the water if manually doing it is an arduous task.

4. Dehumidify the air

The next step is to remove excess moisture from the air using a dehumidifier. Humidity creates the perfect condition for developing mold and mildew in the house. Often mold grows inside the wall and under the carpet, leading to various health issues. For moisture in the air to not present itself as a breeding ground for spores, use a dehumidifier to dry out the air.

Once the air is completely dry, you can move towards drying out your belongings, such as furniture and carpets.

5. Remove the affected material

Most homeowners have to incur hefty costs to fix not only water damages in the house but also damages caused to their belongings. Furniture, appliances, and other essential household items are often ruined because of water damages. Laminated floors can get affected within four days, and water starts seeping inside them. Therefore, one of the measures to fix the water damage is to remove the affected area of the floor and other porous materials to prevent water from penetrating the foundations. It would help inspect other things in the house to see what is still salvageable and what has met its final fate.

This way, you might save some items and prevent water from leaching into the foundations, which can cause structural damage to your house.

6. Clean and sanitize your belongings

Regardless of the type of water causing the water damage, there are sufficient amounts of impurities present in the water contaminating the area. Thus, the impacted area often requires cleaning and sanitizing. All the floors and belongings should be cleaned and sanitized before and after their necessary repairs. Commercial cleaners and sanitizers also ensure that your property is free from pollutants and fit to be used again.

Conclusion

Water damage can quickly escalate into a substantial issue. It might start from mere dripping of water from under your sink and lead to severe mold issues and water penetration into the walls. Water damage often commences behind the walls in the form of water leakage from pipes, and you get to know about it when mold starts damaging your walls. The longer you leave water damage unattended, the bigger problems you face at the end. Therefore, attending to water damage as quickly as possible is always recommended. If it’s too severe to be fixed on your own, ensure to call a water damage expert at your earliest.
