How to Prepare for Flu Season

Although it’s rare to have COVID and the flu simultaneously, it doesn’t mean they won’t overlap.

Flu season goes beyond the flu and cold now that other illnesses have increased. With weakened immune systems, symptoms remain until another illness enters the home, causing a vicious cycle. There are certain strategies you can take to avoid getting sick, but they aren’t always foolproof.

Take a look below to discover your best methods of staying healthy through the flu season!

Stock up on Essentials

With COVID strains, flu, cold, and RSV making its rounds, you don’t want to be left without the basics.

Flu meds aren’t always effective, which is why you’re better off increasing vitamin and nutrient intake. If you’re dealing with a cold, for example, pineapple and marshmallows can help soothe a sore throat.

Water, vitamin C, tea, and chicken noodle soup ingredients are also great essentials to consider. Think about what items you use when you or your family members get sick so you’re immediately prepared.

Prioritize Cleanliness

One of the best ways to defend yourself during flu season is by keeping things (and yourself) clean.

Washing your hands and disinfecting surfaces can prevent bacteria and germs from spreading. Luckily, your body has a fighting chance if you can remove them fast enough. If you’re prone to dry skin, you might want to consider a humidifier in dry climates.

Invest in Tests

Going to the doctor’s office every time someone in the house gets a sniffle will quickly dent your wallet.

Instead of stressing about who is sick with what, you can get in-home tests that offer an answer. Many news channels are reporting on overwhelmed medical staff and flu and COVID testing delayed in certain areas.

If you happen to see at-home COVID or flu tests, add them to your cart. Since these illnesses have common symptoms, it’s difficult to identify what you’re dealing with.

Take Time to Rest

Going out or to work can worsen things when you’re vulnerable to the flu.

If you’ve been exposed and aren’t getting enough rest, you won’t be able to defend yourself. Prioritizing sleep will help your body fight off foreign bacteria before they become a problem. The more rest you get, the stronger your immune system should become, which will help fight off illnesses.

Newer COVID strains are impacting people’s sleep, even after they’ve mostly recovered. If you recently had COVID, you may notice more difficulty staying or falling asleep. Managing stress and avoiding caffeine before bed can also help your body repair itself when you sleep.

Defend Yourself & Fight Off Flu Season

It’s a new year and you don’t have to let flu season take over your household.

Regulalry washing hands and surfaces, along with getting plenty of rest, will prepare your body against the flu. Germs rapidly spread in the winter, especially while children are still in school. When all else fails, it helps to keep flu essentials stocked in the house for a quick recovery.
