How to do

01 Stop the water supply

To remove a faucet nut you must stop the water supply. Otherwise when the faucet nut loses you be wet and a lot of water will be wasted. Please save water.

So if you don’t know how to stop the water supply, I will tell you. The easiest way is to turn off the main valve of supplying water to the entire house. But it can cause some problems to your family while you removing the nut. There is another way that can help you. If you look below the sink you will see two valves. You can stop the water supply just for the sink by turning that both valves clockwise.

02 Remove the nut

There are several methods to remove a faucet nut. We have listed their difficulty below.

Use a wrench

This is the easiest way. There are many wrench options available now. You can use an adjustable wrench because it can adjust for the size of the nut. If you don’t have enough space in that area you can use a basin wrench

First, adjust the wrench size and try to remove it. If that doesn’t work, try to tighten it. You may think what am I saying now but I said right. The objective is to move it no matter what direction. If it doesn’t work also try the above methods with a hammer. But keep in mind other things around the nut can be damaged.

Heat that nut up

After failing with a wrench you can try this out. This is a basic skill that we use for many things. It is called thermal expansion in the science class. There are several ways to heat the nut. Use a hairdryer is a much better way. Let hot airflow through the faucet nut. The hot air heats the nut and then you can remove it using a tool.

You can also try a propane touch or something like that. But be careful about other plumbing parts. Also, make sure to cover every flammable component.

Clean it

Our next method is cleaning the nut and try. The main reason for a stuck faucet nut is the minerals deposit around it. If can clean out some amount of mineral we will be able to remove the nut. An acid-based cleaner is the better cleaner for this type of works.

  • Apply the cleaner all around the exposed surface of the faucet nut. This can be done easily by using a rag.
  • Wait some time and next remove the mineral deposits around the nut using a wire.
  • Wipe off any remaining residues with a rag.

Now you can remove it. But if it didn’t work also apply penetrating oil to the nut and try to loosen the nut with a wrench.

Cut the nut off

If you failed by all the methods I mentioned above there is only one thing to do now. That is removing by cutting it. You can use a hacksaw or a reciprocating saw to do that. But be careful. Especially if this is the first time you using them.

Find a comfortable place. Get the hacksaw or reciprocating saw. Turn on it. Make a vertical cut starting from the top of the faucet nut and going all the way to the end. Now you can remove the nut.

03 Remove the rest

This is an easy part. If you could remove the faucet nut by any method above the rest will remove easily. However, there is another nut cause a problem try those methods again.

How to choose proper tools and removing methods

  • First, take a clear look at the stuck faucet nut and other accessories around it.
  • If there isn’t much space you should use a basin wrench instead of a normal one.
  • If you want to heat up it, please try to use and hairdryer. It will take some time but it is very safe.
  • Use a less flexible wire to clean up.

Wrenches

A wrench is a tool used to applying torque to turn objects usually rotary fasteners, such as nuts and bolts. They provide a grip and mechanical advantage to the user. There are different types of wrenches.

  • Open-end wrench
  • Combination wrench
  • Allen wrench
