A Guide to the Best Golf Schools for Seniors in South Carolina

If you’re heading toward retirement age and planning to spend your days on a suitable golf course, you’re on the right track. Golf is an excellent way to keep aging minds and bodies active, and it may even help you resist arthritis.

Learning to golf is the first step toward embracing this sport, and golf lessons will help you refine your technique for maximum enjoyment. Read on to explore how to find the best golf schools for seniors in South Carolina.

Choosing the Best Golf Schools for Seniors

Attending a golf school lets you enjoy instruction from seasoned professionals and receive important feedback on your performance. If you choose a group session, you’ll also get the chance to meet like-minded people and potential golfing partners.

While price is often an indicator of quality when it comes to the golf equipment and teaching skills available at a golf academy, there are more important factors to consider, including:

  • Varied programs
  • Different price packages
  • Lessons geared to different age groups
  • Professional, experienced instructors

Access to online video lessons or a recording of your session is an awesome way to continue refining your technique. Apart from golf lessons, some academies also offer golf vacations where you can explore the joys of golfing more fully.

You can look online for reviews, explore the internet, or ask for local advice when searching for your best options in South Carolina. These are our suggestions on where to go when you want to improve your golf skills in South Carolina:

Kiawah Island Golf Academy, Kiawah Island

Kiawah Island’s golf learning center caters to enthusiasts of all ages at the state-of-the-art Turtle Point facility. The school offers both private and semi-private lessons.

Private sessions comprise 45 minutes of dedicated instruction from a PGA-certified instructor where participants can focus on a particular aspect of their game. These include their short game, full swing with different clubs, mental strategy, and troublesome shots.

Each session begins with an analysis where the instructor asks questions about you and your game. They then offer feedback and hands-on exercises to help you improve your weaknesses.

The semi-private option takes an hour and gravitates between group and personal drills, depending on the individual participants.

Palmetto Dunes Golf Resort and Academy, Hilton Head Island

Palmetto Dunes Golf Resort offers a chance to practice your golf on one of two courses on weekdays between 10 and 10:50 a.m. The schedule is as follows:

  • Mondays: Putting at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course
  • Tuesdays: Full Swing at the Arthur Hills Golf Course
  • Wednesdays: Ladies-only sessions at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course
  • Thursdays: Chipping at the Arthur Hills Golf Course
  • Fridays: Full Swing at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course

These short sessions involve no more than five players per instructor and have an affordable rate. Doug Weaver and his team of pros also offer a free demonstration and clinic at the Jones course every Monday.

Additionally, you can book a private lesson with a pro golfer to help you iron out any kinks in your game.

Steve Dresser Golf Academy, Pawleys Island

Steve Dresser Golf Academy has focused on golf instruction since 1989. Clinics are offered six days a week in the mornings and comprise the following:

Full Swing Clinics

These sessions take place on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Participants practice with irons and woods, and the clinics include before and after video analysis.

Short Game Sessions

The short game clinics help you refine your putting, chipping, sand, and pitching techniques. These classes run on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

All clinics have no more than three players per instructor, ensuring you receive personalized attention.

Private Lessons

Private lessons commence at 1 pm and comprise an hour of instruction. Students receive discounted rates for booking multiple sessions.

On-Course Instruction Sessions

Head out on the course with an instructor by your side. This training helps you learn the following strategies:

  • Maximizing your use of the teeing ground
  • Shot selection
  • Club selection
  • Reading greens
  • Judging wind and elevation

You can book multiple-player on-course instruction using a Scramble format.

Participants may opt for one or more of the above training sessions in one day, per week, or at times that suit them.

Mel Sole Golf School, South Carolina

Mel Sole Golf School is headquartered in Myrtle Beach, with a second branch in Ellicottville, NY.

This is the only golf school that caters specifically to seniors with a golf school lite version. This shorter, cheaper session comprises 2-hour afternoon sessions over three days, with a maximum of four students per instructor.

Other special options include:

Three-day Junior School

Designed to encourage younger players, this option includes a free lesson for each child accompanied by a paying adult. If you bring two children, the second one pays half the regular price.

This is a fantastic way to spend time with your grandchildren when they come to visit.

9-Hole Playing Lessons

On-course instruction is invaluable for helping you improve your game. During these lessons, a pro will accompany you on your round of golf to help you work on club selection, strategy, or anything else you’re struggling with.

One-Day, Two-Day, and Three-Day Schools

These courses are the main offerings at Mel Sole Golf School. They will help you fine-tune the following aspects of your game:

  • full swing
  • chipping
  • putting
  • pitching
  • bunker shots

Golfers who sign up for these courses also enjoy a discounted rate at one of the villas located right on the golf course.
