If you get injured, your first few months or years during recovery are going to be rough. Even if the injury has healed, there’s still a chance that you are going to experience pain in the affected area. This is fairly common especially if your nerves and bones are involved in the accident. This is just one of the many reasons why you should avoid getting injured.

While inevitable, the pain is not permanent. It eventually goes away with time but of course, we understand how bothersome it is to actually have to experience the pain in the first place. Luckily, there are many ways in which you can help reduce or even eliminate the pain in your body. Here are a few great methods you can try out.

Try Forms of Therapy

Once you feel pain from an injury, you should immediately see a doctor. One of the reasons why you should is that there’s a chance that there are other possible factors that are causing the pain. Another reason is that they may have an idea of what kind of treatment fits your case.

There are many forms of therapy that can help relieve or reduce pain. For those in the sports industry, there are often given personal sessions with licensed therapists. These specialists can help them recover and ensure that they can perform like they used to before the injury.

Aside from this, you should know that there are many forms of therapy depending on what injury you have. One method that you can try for injuries on soft tissues is myotherapy. Soft tissue includes muscles, ligaments, tendons, and fascia. These are often tough to treat as unlike bones, they take much longer to heal.

The main focus of myotherapy is to help prevent or even completely remove the pain you feel in your soft tissue. Of course, part of the therapy is also to preserve the soft tissue’s function and to accelerate the healing. As an added bonus, the therapy also has benefits to various organ systems like the nervous, skeletal, and circulatory systems. Body needs to recover and grow to prevent and rebuild from the injury. That is why there are variations of which to aid your recovery. Giving you body cold or hot therapy. Which one suits an injury better, is cold therapy good or bad?

The RICE Method

If you suffered a minor injury like a sprained ankle, bruises or you recently had spasms, then you don’t need to go to the doctor immediately. There are methods which you can do in the comfort of your home. The most popular of which is the RICE method which is recommended by many physical therapists worldwide.

RICE is basically the acronym for rest, ice, compression, and elevation. As the name suggests, these are the steps that you need to take to help your injury recovery. Let’s get through it step-by-step.

First, you need to rest the affected area. If it’s on your foot, avoid walking. If it’s on your hand, avoid putting pressure on it. Next, grab a cold pack or an ice-covered cloth that you can place on the affected area. This helps numb the pain and lessen any swelling in the muscles if there are any.

For compression, you need to put pressure on it. Use an elastic wrap or a bandage to wrap the area tightly. Don’t wrap it too tightly that your blood won’t circulate properly. Last but not the least, make sure to elevate the injured area to alleviate the pressure. If it’s on your ankle, sit down and find a soft cushion to rest your feet on.

If the pain got worse, then it’s a must that you visit a doctor ASAP. There could be major problems other than the injury itself.

Buy Over-The-Counter Anti-Inflammatories

There are some over-the-counter medicines that you can buy to relieve the pain temporarily. These include aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen. However, keep in mind that not all injuries can be treated with these medicines. As they are anti-inflammatory, they can only treat those related to swelling such as sprains.

Over-The-Counter Anti-Inflammatories

If you want to try pain medication, then it’s a must that you visit a doctor first. For starters, most heavy pain medication can only be bought if you have a prescription. Another thing worth noting is that you need to be very careful with these. Pain medication in high doses can be dangerous so only take it if you are under supervision.

Pain can be bothersome and often debilitating especially if you have other things to do. These simple methods above can help relieve or reduce the pain eventually. As always, it’s best to consult with a doctor if the pain persists. There could be unseen factors causing the pain after all.
