Why The Final Months Feel So Stressful.
The third trimester is a strange mix of excitement and worry.
Your body is evolving every week. Your brain is swirling with questions about labour and finances and if you installed the car seat correctly. And your energy? Half empty.
You’re not crazy either. Studies have found that about one in five women suffer from anxiety disorder while pregnant or after childbirth.
That’s a lot of parents feeling the exact same way.
Here’s the thing…
Stress is part of life. Allowing stress to accumulate is another story. You don’t have to eliminate every worry in your life. But you can prevent little stresses from becoming major ones.
Get Ahead Of The To-Do List
The number one cause of late pregnancy stress? Leaving everything until the last minute.
When there’s a long list and little time, even mundane tasks become daunting. The solution is simple. Complete major tasks early so last few weeks are for relaxation – not chaos.
Book The Fun Stuff Before It Turns Into Stress
Having your maternity photos taken is something many couples plan… and procrastinate on way too much.
Ideally somewhere between 28-34 weeks. Your bump is visible, but you can still stand/pose/comfy enjoy yourself. Go any later and you’ll be squeezing it in between swollen ankles and stuffing yourself into your hospital bag.
Wondering what to wear for maternity photos is usually the biggest stressor. Hiring a quality local professional takes out a lot of the guesswork. How to dress, what colours to wear, posing- you won’t have to worry about any of that when you work with an experienced McLean VA maternity photographer. You can avoid scrambling for maternity photo outfit ideas at 2am with the right guidance.
Still not sure what to wear? Maternity photos are best when you keep it simple:
- Fitted outfits that show off your bump
- Soft, solid colours over busy patterns
- One flowy dress and one casual look
- Coordinated (not matching) outfits with your partner
Get it booked, get it done and enjoy the memories.
Win-win, right?
Pack The Hospital Bag Early
Babies don’t always stick to the schedule.
Try to pack your bag by week 36. Include loose fitting clothes, toiletries, cell phone charger (with a long cord!), snacks and your paperwork and babies going-home outfit.
Once it’s sitting by the door, that’s one less thing on your mind.
Prep The Nursery In Small Chunks
Don’t attempt to organize the entire nursery over the course of a single weekend. Break the project up into three smaller tasks: one weekend for furniture, one for washing baby clothes and one for organizing supplies.
Micro successes accumulate. Every completed task lifts some burden from you.
Protect Your Sleep
Sleep is one of the first things to go in the final months.
Research out of Poland showed that 80.6% of third-trimester women experienced sleep disturbance. Discomfort from back pain, heartburn and frequent urination all contribute.
And when sleep suffers… stress goes up.
It’s a vicious cycle. But there are simple ways to break it:
- Sleep on your side with a pregnancy pillow
- Avoid big meals close to bedtime
- Keep your bedroom cool and dark
- Put your phone away 30 minutes before bed
Have trouble sleeping through the night? Take a nap during the day. Just 20 minutes can help improve your mood and patience.
Move Your Body (Gently).
The last thing you may feel like doing is exercise. Movement can be one of the most effective ways to beat stress.
You don’t have to go hardcore. A walk after dinner, prenatal yoga or gentle swim can do the trick. Exercise releases endorphins, helps with aches and pains and may even help you sleep at night.
Listen to your body. Talk to your doctor or midwife before beginning any exercises — particularly during your third trimester.
Pretty simple, right?
Build Your Support Team
Nobody should go through the final months alone.
Rely on the people around you. Most of the time your partner, family and friends want to help…they just don’t know what to do.
So tell them.
Be specific. Don’t say, “let me know if you can help.” Ask for something definite. Can they whip up a few freezer meals? Walk the dog this week? Drive you to your next doctor’s appointment?
People love having a clear job.
It’s also good to discuss your fears openly with your partner. Birth plans, financial concerns, how you’ll divide up night feeds… Sharing it all means anxieties can’t fester.
If the anxiety starts to become overwhelming, talk to your doctor. Pregnancy anxiety is extremely common, and very manageable. Seeking help is strength.
Learn To Say “No”
Here’s something that often gets overlooked…
Don’t try to make everyone happy these last few months. Baby showers, family visitors, work obligations — it all piles up quickly.
Feel free to decline those additional social invitations. Feel free to restrict visitors. And feel free to pass off those work responsibilities a bit sooner.
Protecting your energy now means you’ll have more of it when baby arrives.
Crossing The Finish Line
There’s no reason your last few months of pregnancy have to be overwhelmed with stress and worry.
To quickly recap:
- Get the big jobs done early
- Book fun moments like maternity photos before 34 weeks
- Protect your sleep
- Keep moving gently
- Lean on your support team
- Say no when you need to
None of these will eliminate all your stress. But they will collectively calm down the end-of-year dash.
Take one small step today. Future you (and your baby) will be grateful.
