Everyone experiences anxiety at least once in their life. Anxiety can come in many forms. Some people experience social anxiety, separation anxiety, travel anxiety, panic disorders, or specific fears that spark anxiety. With a master list of anxiety disorders, it is no wonder that everyone has experienced this life disruption.

As the mental health world has become less stigmatized, there has been an increase in research and treatment for anxiety. To learn how to overcome anxiety, you must first understand the root and symptoms of anxiety.

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety looks very different for everyone. Some people may feel fearful of specific things, while others may excessively worry about the uncertainties of life. Depending on the severity, anxiety can seriously disrupt a person’s ability to function. 

Anxiety can physically cause muscle tension, upset stomach, dizziness, and an increased heart rate. Mentally, anxiety can cause a feeling of impending doom, nervousness, irritability, and a lack of concentration. While the symptoms can be extremely serious, there is still hope of overcoming anxiety with the proper resources and help!

Ways to Overcome Anxiety

Seek Professional Help

Therapy and counseling have become the new normal in today’s society. Therapy specifically, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, can help those that live with anxiety. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, also known as CBT, is a type of therapy that confronts the behaviors and moods of a person. There are a variety of professional assistance options available. You can also access trustworthy how-to articles or you can reach out to an in-person/online counselor that can walk you through any negative behaviors such as anxiety. You can also access the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, SAMHSA, 24/7 for immediate help. 

Practice Relaxation Techniques

Relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, and deep breathing can greatly benefit those that live with anxiety. By actively slowing your mind down, you can focus on the reality of your situation. Many participate in meditation because it allows them to take their mind off any stressors. They can then put their focus on their present bodily movement. Similarly, yoga can also help you overcome anxiety. Moving your body and being mindfully aware of your breath can be a fantastic way to take your mind off the things that plague you. Deep breathing is a big part of meditation and yoga. Practicing deep breathing is a fantastic way to release tension and calm your mind.

Implement Routines

Implementing routines can be as simple as going for a daily walk or starting your morning with a breakfast smoothie. Those that live with anxiety can overcome their worries by creating a routine that encourages security and health. Daily practices allow an individual to feel safe. Vital things to include in your routine are exercise, healthy eating, and self-care. Not only does exercise make you physically more resilient, but it can also boost your mood! Healthy eating is another way that you can boost your mood; also avoiding caffeine and high sugar will help. Self-care is the act of doing something that makes you happy and improves your overall being. Focusing on the little things that make you happy and healthier can help you overcome your anxiety.
